Web Distributed Data Exchange (WDDX)
XML-based technology offered in newly released software development kit;
WDDX.org website launched to support open source development of technology
NEW ORLEANS, Dec. 8, 1998 -- The Web Distributed Data Exchange, (WDDX) a new XML-based technology introduced by Allaire Corporation today at the C|NET Builder.com Live conference, makes it easy for companies to exchange structured data between Web applications. WDDX gives companies the power to create 'Web Syndicate Networks,' where the content and commerce assets of any Web site can be exposed as services to other Web sites. This technology will enable new types of business on the Web, and increase interoperability between varying Web application platforms.
In its simplest form, WDDX can be used for data exchange on the Web without having to work directly with XML. This allows developers to easily create browser-to-server
data-binding applications similar to traditional client/server systems, off-line Web applications, and server-to-server distributed applications. The most powerful use of the technology is for Web syndication. With WDDX, a Web site built in Perl can easily exchange database content and expose transactions and procedures to another Web site created with a platform such as ColdFusion, ASP or other Web application servers.
"WDDX provides a rich foundation for Web content and commerce syndication," said Jeremy Allaire, vice president of technology strategy, Allaire Corp. "As thousands of organizations migrate to the Web, and as new companies emerge around the Web business model, it is critical that the applications developed to support an online business can easily leverage the assets and applications of other companies, regardless of the platform they are created on. Through this kind of interoperability, the Web will emerge as a platform for new business models based on syndicate networks."
"WDDX solves critical problems involved in exchanging data between different Web programming environments," said G. Hussain Chinoy, CEO and chief information architect of Granularity Information Architecture, Inc. "With WDDX, we are easily able to create applications for electronic commerce and EDI systems using any Web application server platform or development tool, whether it is ColdFusion, ASP, Perl or Java, and know that our investment can be leveraged by any other developer, on any other platform. WDDX opens up the world of Web programming languages and XML in a straightforward way."
Distribution and Platform Compatibility
WDDX is a free, open-source technology available as a software development kit (SDK) from WDDX.org, an Allaire-sponsored Web site built to facilitate the ongoing development and distribution of WDDX. The WDDX SDK is available for any platform that supports XML and popular Web programming languages. The SDK includes libraries, example code, reference material and documentation. Both the Web site and the SDK were created to enable interoperability between Web applications, and to encourage new business models based on Web syndicate networks.
"WDDX solves a variety of problems familiar to experienced Web application developers including: application distribution, complex data storage and cross-language data exchange, "said Ben Archibald, founder, ChangeMedia. "At ChangeMedia we have realized exciting development efficiency by storing complex data objects in relational tables or flat files. Using WDDX, we are able to avoid the process of custom parsing
while increasing the portability of information across SQL platforms."
WDDX language support
The WDDX SDK provides modules for JavaScript 1.x, ColdFusion 4.0, COM, Perl and Java. With the COM module, WDDX can be used from within Active Server Pages, Visual Basic, Delphi, Java, PowerBuilder and C++, and Microsoft Office.
